Are you ready for cold & flu season?

Even when you've gotten a flu shot, a fall illness may pay you or your household a visit (though, if it is flu that strikes, it will likely be much milder if you've had your vaccine).

Get set for illness before it arrives, with our checklist for a smoother sick day:

  • STOCK UP on your sick-day supplies such as a thermometer, tissues, hand sanitizer/wipes, and check your supply of (non-expired) over-the-counter medicines. Consider picking up some creature comforts, as your budget allows – tea, honey, cough drops, Vaseline® for a raw nose, easy-to-eat (and prepare) foods. This can save you a miserable grocery store trip.

  • REVIEW your vaccines. A flu shot is recommended for most people– at our office, you can walk in 7 days a week to get your shot. RSV, COVID, shingles, or other vaccines may also be appropriate, depending on your age and health history – talk with your clinician at your next appointment.

  • WASH, COVER, VENTILATE: Wash your hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and bring fresh air indoors when practical to reduce your risk of catching a bug.

  • PROTECT your routines. Good sleep, hydration, balanced meals, and normal physical activity matter for your immune system.

  • KEEP KIDS’ SUPPLIES in one (safe) spot. Put the thermometer, Vicks® Vaporub, and other go-to supplies for kids' illnesses in one safe spot (that only you can reach), so you aren't digging for them at 2 a.m. with a sick kiddo on your shoulder.

  • STAY HYDRATED & CALL EARLY. If you get sick, flu antivirals work best when started early, often within the first 1–2 days of symptoms, especially for people at higher risk of complications. Call or text us right away with flu symptoms so we can get you seen. While you are sick, stay hydrated, and pay attention to whether you’re improving or getting worse.

  • GET URGENT HELP for red flags. Trouble breathing, chest pain/pressure, confusion, severe dehydration, blue-toned lips or face, or other serious symptoms may require urgent or emergency care. You can call our office day or night to reach the on-call clinician.

Wishing you a safe and healthy fall!
